Poetry is .. "an emotion caught in the hand, in the mouth. Two words that bump against each other and create something new. A song between friends." Jane Yolen
Poetry is rhythm, word choice, playful language and music in the pages of a book. It is words strung together to share a thought, a feeling, a connection. Neurologist and author Dr. Oliver Sacks writes that our brains are wired for sound. "This is why," he says, it can be such an effective way to remember or to learn. It is no accident that we teach our youngest with rhymes and songs."
The brevity of poetry offers opportunities for both confident and emergent readers and writers. Like poetry, lyrical picture books are compact stories or moments that are accessible to a wide range of learners. Like poetry, lyrical picture books breathe meaning and music, turning storytelling into an immersive sensory experience.
